This post is about how to use pingback/trackback to get more links and contents for your blog.If you have a blog, you probably have 2 important things to ‘worry’ about.

1) Finding/writing quality content to post to your blog

2) Getting quality links to your blog

Here’s a proposal on how you can have both at the same time!

The idea is to use the pingback/trackback feature that comes with a Wordpress blog.

Here’s a typical scenario:

- Person A writes something on her blog.

- You read her blog and have some afterthought.

- You blog about your thought in your own blog (hence more content for your blog).

- You either pingback or send a trackback to Person A’s blog

- Person A’s blog receives the pingback/trackback and displays it as a comment to the original post, linking it back to your blog (hence another link juice for you).

Now, for this method to work, 2 things must be ready:

1) Person A’s blog must allow trackback and pingback

2) Ideally, person A’s blog sets “DoFollow” for her trackback and pingback.

How to know if a blog allows trackback and pingback?

Simple, just check out the blog and see if there’s any trackback or pingback links. They are either in the comments section or a section on its own (like LeadsLeap blog).

How to know if the trackback/pingback has “DoFollow”?

If you use Firefox, you can install a plugin called SEO For Firefox. The plugin will highlight links with “NoFollow”. Any link without “NoFollow” is “DoFollow”.

If you use IE, change to Firefox! (How is my humour?)

How to create a pingback or trackback?

1) First, it should be enabled in your wordpress blog. You can do that by logging into Options » Discussion - and making sure there is a check mark next to Attempt to notify any Weblogs linked to from the article (slows down posting.).

2) Next, write a post and link back to the original post.

In most cases, Pingback will happen automatically and there is no need for you to send any trackback.

If you have any difficulty in pingback or trackback, refer to this excellent guide.

A note on “DoFollow” trackback and pingback

Wordpress blog, by default, has “NoFollow” trackback/pingback link. If you own a blog and would like to advocate “DoFollow” for trackback and pingback, you can install Dofollow Trackbacks Plugin.

If you decide to do that, write a comment below to let our readers know you advocate “DoFollow” on your blog. Who knows, some readers may decide to read your blog and pingback to your blog :)

Final note

You are welcome to link to LeadsLeap blog and get a pingback or trackback, provided that you don’t spam. For LeadsLeap members, you can add your referid to the link. It will pingback to the original post.

This is a great post, and some may not understand how important this info is. Bloggers who are worried about spam commenting can moderate there comments manually also. This is what I do if I feel a comment is spam and they are trying to linkback, because their link isnt going to do my readers or blog any good.

    Which url does one enter
    in order to get the
    advertising needed to
    promote one’s blog.

    Richard,

It depends on which blog post you’re trying to promote. Generally, if you simply want to drive traffic to your blog, just use your blog url. But if you are promoting certain blog post, you should use the url of that blog post.

Advice: If you are advertising, DON’T send traffic to your blog homepage, unless your homepage is optimized for sales purpose.

Minimally, I suggest you create a page in your blog specially for advertising. It can be an about us page. The title should be something that tell people WHY they should stop and read your blog post. For example, the title can be “10 reasons why you should read this blog at least once a week.” or “Thousands of people are GLUED to this blog. Find out why……”

In your wordpress admin login, you should see these links in the first line:

    Hello Kenneth,

I read you thread about trackback an ping and your answer to ?where will I find the ‘options’. I don’t know why, but I don’t see - after admin login - the a.m. line:
    dashbord | write | manage | Comments | Blogroll | Presentation | Plugins | Users | Options.

It only shows me above: my dashboard | new post | bloginfo

Is there some explanation for it? Thanks for your answer

The ability to learn doesn’t link to a person’s age but a person’s mindset. To learn fast, you need to have the right strategies. Everyone has his own strategies. It is just either right or wrong strategies. If it works great, the strategies you have is right, otherwise it is wrong … fine tune it.

Your instructions are concise and easy to follow and should make it very easy for new bloggers to implement. I also use a wordpress plugin called CommentLuv, which will post a link to the commentors lastest blog post.

I like this feature, but I’m only able to use it on certain sites. I haven’t been able to successfully perform a pingback as of yet. I couldn’t get the trackback or linkback to work on this site. I have Dofollow installed as well. I have been able to get the trackback feature to work on a few sites though. I have a lot of homework to do, but this is definitely worth learning about.

    Hi Kenneth,

Great information, I applied all in your post.

Just yesterday I purchased the Ultimate Blogging Theme from this 15 year old Kid who besides the highly optimized themes for a WordPress blog provides some videos on how he monetizes and tricks that made him rank well in Google and is making him tones of money. He sure makes the “Gurus” who advocate recycled tips about blogs look bad.

I honestly think this info is a must for anyone trying to make it on the net. Personally I have many static websites but now I am paying attention and changing most of them into blogs. This is why I came here to read your great info

See this Kid here how he does it with free example sites he owns …just unbelievable. http://www.nicholasmancini.ws/ultimatebloggingtheme.com

Nicholas that theme is just a ad sense theme mm, sorry but there’s 100’s of those out there for free, you just got ripped by a 15 year old kid that probably got a hand from his high traffic neighbor. I actually have 1000 word press themes that look extremely similar. (plus as a programmer i must add his theme is rather dull) see a theme has to be unique while at the same time servicing your needs plus your visitors needs. His themes failed miserably, I ran away crying mummy.

its ok to be a newbie, no shame in it.
Anyway m8, a simple way to look at it is dofollow: alters the code that is default in a wordpress blog which tells search engines not to follow your article posts. see each post is posted with a default meta tag type code.

I really enjoy reading the Leadsleap stuff…I find it very entertaining. I agree a wordpress blog is the way to go. I’ve gotten back in the saddle and have been posting fresh daily content, and I can see daily progress of it climbing in Google.
I really do believe a content filled wordpress blog is better than a garden variety website with simpple keywords, meta tags etc etc…The search engines come back often to spider and index blogs because the content is always updating…This is why they can outdo a “static” website.

Technically, you should check with the developer of the plugin. The download url is http://www.turkhitbox.com/wordpress-seo/dofollow-trackbacks-plugin.html. The download instructions are as follow:
    Installation of Dofollow Trackbacks Plugin:
    1. Download the source file: thb-dofollow-trackback.phps
    2. Rename the file to thb-dofollow-trackback.php
    3. Upload it to your plugins folder
    4. Active the Dofollow Trackbacks Plugin on the plugin page
What I can do is to send you to the correct site. For other question regarding the plugin, it’s really not within my control. Hope you understand.

In the past few months, since January 2008, I’ve been trying several traffic tips that I’ve ran across in my venture to create an online business.
It can be difficult to find information that you can apply immediately and see immediate results. Thanks for the post on how to use trackback/pingback. This will be my test to see what happens.
In a case like this where I’m creating a pingback/trackback, would it be feasable to use say a feedburner link. I’m still researching how feedburner works, and how it can also be applied.

    Hi,
After I post something on a blog, I get a lot of pingbacks, but when I follow those links those sites seem to consist of nothing but pingback links. Are these good sites to be pinged from?

Well, I finally figured out how this Feed burner works.
I also figured out how to activate the ad sense feature as well.
Sunil, the ping backs your talking about, are you noticing them as traffic to your blog? Or is that something thats auto generating because of the track back links left behind by comments on your blog?

I’ve found that a lot of spammers use trackbacks to unrelated blogs to get traffic… not cool.

Thanks for sharing this. I never really knew the benefit of using this feature. It didnt seem to do anything for me. But I agree that Wordpress is very search engine friendly and you also need to use your own hosted Wordpress blog, not one hosted by Wordpress themselves.

    Hi Kenneth,

This is for anyone who can answer. I want to be clear.

I can get a pingback/track back to my blog simply by posting my comments here?

Does any1 have to click on my link? Should I click on my link? Or is it automatic?

    Thanks in advance.

I used a do follow wordpress plugin in my blog and used akismet plugin to stop spam comments. It works well.

I’m going to set up this do follow deal on my blog. I’m still a little confused on how to do it but I did download it to my blog. With all that said I advocate the do follow link.

I’m a believer. My stats across the board for every country has jumped more than 200 % since starting to use trackbacks and pingbacks. I used to have trouble getting Canadian Visitors.
10 per month was pretty sad. Now there are over 1800 per month.
I used to also get maybe 1 or 2 visitors per day from overseas.
Now getting 100-200 from each and every country.

Mind you I also started using Tags. Tags has bumped up my search engine responses to 87 per day. Not bad for starting all this a couple months ago. Mind you I’m not even making one sale yet. But I’m sure that will fall into place.

Any one have they blog with pingback/trackback dofollow enable?

And what if you’re on Blogger w/ Firefox instead of WP? How does one pingback in Blogger, other than throwing a link to a blog inside the post, which the original post author may or may not see?

Thanks for shedding light on the pingback trackback issue. I have been receiving notifications from my blog about it but did not know what it was about. Thanks for shedding the light. As a gesture of my appreciation I have included a link to my blog in this comment. Just Click on my name to be taken to my blog. Add me as a do follow person. LeadsLeap rocks!!

    Hello Kenneth,
All this blogging lingo - No-follow, Do-follow, was news to me; however, I finally took the plunge into blogging, created this blog, installed the do-follow plugin, I even installed his logo on my blog. Whether I am a “do follow” believer, I am too green to know but time will tell. Also, as a LeadsLeap member, I am trying to learn the pingback - trackback stuff. Thanks Kenneth for all your educational posts.
